With virgin media, and my broadband connection cable comes from my loft, down into my spare room and along skirting board and then into my modem to connect up my pc.
Now I am not very technical so please excuse the stupid question,
would a wireless broadband connection which virgin media have on there site then allow me to do away with all the cable that is in spare room and in the modem just now?
Could i then move the main desktop into anyroom as i wouldnt needto be connected to the old wired modem?
I do believe that virgin just send the wireless kit out to you and let you set it up yourself, Can you just put the wireless modem on a shelf or in any room ?
What happens to the old cable the one that is from the pc currently and is up in the loft space ?
I am about to redecorate and may change the main pc into another room and this would be benefical.
Many thanks

I haven't got virgin broadband or anything. But after reading through there technical parts of there website. By the sounds of things. You can have your Computer Or Laptops anywhere you want as long as they have a wireless compatible hardware. But the Wireless Modem still has to be connected to a cable. There website is very sketchy, as it doesn't say about connecting it to a cable line or phone line. But i would have thought you would of. Maybe someone who has it can confirm this. Hope this is of some help.Peter: Hey Lois... what's this word? Lois: Evil. Peter: And this one? Lois: Knievel. Peter: And this one? Lois: Was. Peter: And this one? Lois: Born. Peter: And this one? If your broadband is delivered via ADSL i.e your phone line, then you would need to obtain an ADSL wireless router. Presumably this is what virgin will supply for you?
Having obtained this piece of kit, you will then have to fit a wireless adaptor to your main pc if it doesn't already have one. These come in many different forms.
If your pc is actually a laptop, then it may already have wireless capabilities.0 -
If you're on a cable-delivered service, you'll need a router which can take a cable input, and then a wireless adaptor for your pc (easiest ones are USB), and you should be able to move the pc out of the spare room to wherever you want it to be. The router will have to sit wherethe cable is terminated, so prob still in your spare room.......Gettin' There, Wherever There is......
I have a dodgy "i" key, so ignore spelling errors due to "i" issues, ...I blame Apple

what old cable, you still need the cable that comes into your house and into the modem as this is your broadband connection, you can then connect the modem to the router by using the cable thats in the same box as the router

replied to each of your questions, i have virgin so its how i know0 -
As long as your loft is dry and has a power supply you could get them to cut the cable in the loft and connect it to the modem, or remove all the cabling to your spare room and put it in the loft. ie Cable comes in to loft, connects to modem (in the loft as well)
You also need to put your wireless router in the loft and connect it to the modem, a short wire called a RJ45 which is usually supplied. This will send a wireless signal all around the area.
Ensure you get a good quality router, as with cheaper ones, the signal starts to get weaker the more floors and walls it goes thru.
Remember to secure your router, as you will be broadcasting a signal to all your neighbours as well!Regards,

well rj45 is the connector, the cable is ethernet0 -
if you want to go wireless look for an "N" series router and compatible adapters, for security use wpa2
an alternative is Powerline Homeplug0 -
I am with Virginmedia and have a Surfboard modem connected to a Netgear wireless router which has its aerial outside on a windowsill and use USB wireless adapters to route my broadband connection between 2 houses. The wireless router was supplied free by Virginmedia.
