Disastrous LPG MPG - Question

I have out my car into a garage to have an LPG conversion and they have leant me a Volvo S40 (2002) Bi Fuel car which of course runs on LPG.

When I left the garage he assured me the tank was full and the guage confirmed it. So on the way home tonight from somewhere else I noticed that the tank was 3/4 empty and i decided to fill up. I had done 120 miles.

I filled up the car with £15 worth (30 litres) and driving home the guage took a while to show full. However, I am a little confused,

Surely I cannot have driven 120 miles and used 30l of autogas? I have had the AC on but 16mpg is terrible and petrol would just be as efficient.

you dont get the same fuel economy running lpg as you do petrol, you seemed to be getting 18 mpg for the 120 miles you done, maybe the tank wasnt exactly full when you picked it up?
lpg is not as easy to gauge as petrol so it may show different on the gauge.
the best way to measure mpg is over a full tank (one you know is full)
it doesnt seem to bad mpg to be honest for an lpg. what size of engine was it?

1.8 i think. 18mpg is awful really. the replacement LPG car will just be as efficient as the petrol car on cost per mile terms.
I just hope my car when it comes back can do more than that otherwise its a wasted conversion.

Until you get your own car back, and test the mpg it gives you, there doesn't seem to be any reason to worry.

    What are you having converted?

Yes, I was going to suggest that as an option.

Fuel gauges are notoriously misleading. Just because it says full doesn't mean the tank is.

The S40 1.8 bi fuel should do about 8.1l/100km on petrol and about 10.4l/100km on lpg (mixed driving)

Whilst lpg consumption is about 25% more than petrol, remember that petrol is about twice as expensive as lpg.
