Hi
I have NatWest Home Insurance contents with accidental damage. Discovered yesterday that I threw out a black sack full of mine & my hubbys shoes a few weeks ago thinking it was rubbish. We were getting a new bedroom fitted and everything was packed up.
In all there must be at least £500 worth of shoes - do you think I can claim on house insurance?
Thanks.

You can always claim. Will your claim be successful? - that is another question.
Only way to find out really is to ask the insurers.
If you don't ask, then you definitely won't 'get'.0 -
I would wait for a few answers here first. Even enquiring about a claim with some insurers counts as a claim.make the most of it, we are only here for the weekend.
and we will never, ever return.0 -
Clothing is never new for old. You would be asked to itemise the shoes and the value at purchase and the dates. Then assuming they dont want evidence, they will reduce the value of the claim for wear and tear and then take off your excess.
If you have a policy with a no claims discount you may find that the amount you actually end up being paid will cost you more in the long run due to higher premiums.I am an Independent Financial Adviser (IFA). Some Insurers would require you to have "Unspecified Personal Possession" / "Unspecified Personal Belongings Cover" (Basically cover away from the home) for this to be covered.0

Surely if you threw them away, albeit in error, it wasn't accidental damage?.................
....I'm smiling because I have no idea what's going on ...:)

Why? The loss didn't occur outside the home.
If you read the definition of Accidental Damage in a lot of policies (Not all) it
basically describes that it covers Accidentally Damaging a physical item. It often does not include "Accidentally losing an item".
The personal belongings section normally specifies that it includes loss so some Insurers will decline for losing an item even within the home if you don't have the personal belongings section. Have a read of your policy Geri and see if it covers it under the Accidental Damage Section.
There are companies that will just pay the claim either intentionally or by mistake0 -
I don't have any AD cover under mine.0

Thanks I'll take this advice into account. Will hopefully get around to ringing them tomorrow.
Will post the outcome.0
