goin to farnborough from edinburgh on 10th july,back on 20th. 2 oaps return. 240 cheapest. anything cheaper or promotions would help:j

National Express are showing Advance fares (two singles for two people) on those dates, with Senior railcards, @ £134.50 total, if you check out the different times.
It would be worth getting railcards just for this trip if you don't already have them, you'd still be better off than paying £240.
