If you enjoy backstabbing in local corridors of power and being manipulated by all and sundry - LG would be a good choice. If you were my grandson I'd advise you to follow the money - that's what we all work for. (and thank your for the fan letter)davelewis wrote:Not of any relevance to this thread - but Dora the Explorer - you're great!! I really love reading your posts - they are really relevant and speak from experience. I am training to be a solicitor - hopefully in local government. Any advice??0 -

You already have skills and knowledge which would greatly benefit community health initiatives - health education and health promotion for instance. This kind of work would also give you brownie points on your CV.
yep, I'd love to do that, although I didn't really think a 2nd yr student could be that much use. I'm looking into it, hopefully somewhere in the Middle East, so I can brush up on my arabic, and get some good experience at the same time.
Thanks everyone for all the good advice, really helpful

Well, I'm a third year medic myself and hope I can offer some advice.
If you're looking for a job in the medical field, be prepared to be disappointed because of high competition from the medics in higher years. You're currently in a spot between having zero knowledge of medicine and knowing all the stuff which a competent doctor should know. Given the choice, hospitals would normally take 3rd and 4th years for any practical work because these medics would have some exposure to clinical medicine by then. Your free time would be better spent doing things like joining student societies to strengthen your CV.
But all is not lost.
You can try working as a medical notes summariser, but I'm not holding out my breath for it if I were you, because a medic's handwriting can be notoriously bad. 0 -
Have you considered approaching any of the research clinicians and checking with them of any vacancies? They almost always need assistance with data input.peace wrote:What kind of work can 2nd year medical students do?
I want to do something that will give me more experience and be paid for it, but right now it seems like thats asking for too much!
Also, what do you with people that say they'll ring back but don't? Last summer I tried ringing the local hospitals but nobody got back to me. I didn't want to ring again because I wasn't applying for a certain job, and so felt a bit awrkward. Would it be worth ringing up GPs and asking if they have any jobs too?
Thanks in advance.
When it's the time to do elective please have a look at this. Best Wishes0 -
Am v interested in this thread, as my eldest son is also a 2nd yr Medical Student. He has worked (since he was 16) at a Nursing Home. Once he got to 18 he became a Care assistant there. He feels that it has been really worthwile work and has helped him with his early experience placements. He works all holidays, earning money for his social life. He is thinking about doing some tutoring in Maths and Science this Christmas.0

I work in an agency for Social Care temps and we have a number of Med Students on our books, rates depend on where you are really (I note someone above has listed £6 an hour, our minimum rate is £8 as we are in Cambridge, apparently the second most expensive place to live after London). We are quite happy to fit around studies and while it isn't quite the same area there is a fair amount of overlap.0

1st year I did Nursing Home
2nd year Clerical Bank Staff at local hospital
3rd year NAGTY summer school and Univeristy summer school
4th year (next year) will be a 10 week elective so no time to work and earn cash.
Good Luck and apply early I think that's the secret, but as medics we are nomally the last to finish at Uni for the summer. Why pay full price when you may get it YS

The thing to be careful of if you are going to go into care work is that you have to get a CRB check and these can take a long time, so its woth applying a couple of months before you will actually be available so tha everything is all ready for you to go when you get to your holidays. Its really frustrating when people come in for summer work at the start of their holidays and by the time all their papework is sorted they've only got a week or two of holiday left!0

Ebay.
You'll be in hospitals long enough during 3rd/4th/final year. Plus the whole 'rest of your working life' business!0
