aaargh my laptop has no sound - cant see device - help!

hi smart people

would really like some help please...

I have just reformatted the hdd on my HP Pavillion laptop with WinXP Home Edtn (which it was running before).

It all runs fine apart from the Conexant sound device - when I install the drivers it says no device present.

It is not visible in control panel either and I have a PCI device under other devices in device manager displaying an exclamation with a code 28 error.

I pulled all the drivers pre-format using drivermagician lite tool to make sure I have them all and I have since gone to the HP & Conexant sites and downloaded the latest ones. I also made sure i installed the MS Universal driver first.

A few other unfortuneate souls have documented the same issue on the web, one in the HP forums but no one has published a resolution (yet)

any ideas how to fix it all gratefully received

thanks in advance

Didn't your HP come with driver disks?

Check that it's not been turned off in the bios

Select the unknown device and try:

Update driver > No not this time > Install from a list > don't search
Look for sound drivers and go from there.

You are using the correct drivers from the manufacturers website?

It is certainly worth installing all the drivers on the disks, rather than relying on Windows to provide.
I have in the past been warned by Windows that the driver I was attempting to install was older and the recommendation is to keep the existing one. I still load the older driver because I know it works, but the new one may have glitches.
I can always update later, then rollback if there are problems.

Have you tried googling the instance id of the driver that fails to start, to make sure you are using the correct driver?

Microsofts kb888111 patch sometimes resolves this sort of problem, is that what you meant by universal driver?

I don't think so. Many machines require the UAA (Universal Audio Architecture) driver to be installed before the one for the sound card.
