Usually it is a free service provided by the establishment, somtimes you need to ask the staff for the access code.

Its usually free as long you buy a drink but you would have to ask if you need to buy a drink or drinks

If you try accessing it (there should be no encryption on the WiFi), and load up the internet you should come to a page where you have to log-in to access the internet. Then you have to purchase an access code for an hour or two, that's how it normally works anyway :)

Surely it defeats the object of a quiz to require knowledge, not just the fastest fingers to cheat?

BT has free a roaming service that you opt in to. You share to others a small bandwidth off your router and you can use other BT hotspots when out and about.
