Help please audio device not installed

Hi

My laptop won't play any audio files. This has happened suddenly and may be since I installed something else, but I don't know how to get the audio device back!

I need to do some work on it today using a sound file so would greatly appreciate any advice. I have looked in the control panel in "sound devices" and it just tells me that no device is installed, with no other options.

many thanks if anyone can help!

Do you see the Audio in device manager, and is it shown as working there?

Id be intererested in the answer to this, as I've got a similar problem - even bought and installed a new sound card to no avail :(
Please forgive me if my comments seem abrupt or my questions have obvious answers, I have a mental health condition which affects my ability to see things as others might.

Thank you - it is showing Conexant High Definition Audio - no drivers installed. Does that make sense? I am running windows updates at the mo and it has been going for two hours; in case that is the problem but I doubt it.

Sounds like you may need to install the driver. I think this is the one you need:

Thanks Taffybiker! I installed it but is said could not find media device. will give it a go with an audio file but the icon on my desktop still has a cross next to it; I will try restarting as well.

BTW the exact message on the icon says "no audio output device is installed". Thanks for any help.

The only other things I can think of are perhaps the BIOS has somehow become changed, or it is a hardware fault.

Enter BIOS (usually by pressing DEL, F10 or F2 as the machine starts up, but worth checking with the manual), and check the settings for the audio device and set to AUTO or ENABLE. If you're not sure then somewhere there will be an option to restore default values. Select this then save and exit. Restart.

If it is not the bios or driver then the problem is more serious and will need professional service.

    Hi

I went into Device Manager today, and clicked on "install updates" - from the web. It worked! I can't remember if this is what I did before and it didn't work then, or whether I have done it slightly differently or just had a few days away from the problem and both laptop and I had a rest which seemed to help

Anyway, also on starting up there have been problems and so I have restored default settings during the start up process, so hopefully this has helped. Seems to have sort of resolved the issue itself eventually.

Thanks for the advice - I was going to take it back to PC world where I bought it, at a cost of £69.99 for a repair job.
