Advice please re 18 year old son and Tax Credits

I left my husband last November.

When my tax credits form came last month i notice my son was not on there, the other two kids were.

I rang them up about it but keep getting fobbed off.

When i was with my husband we only got the minimum payment for the kids, but now i am on my own i need as much as possible.

He is at school for another year as he has just done his AS exams.

How can i get them to acknowledge him?

I had a letter yesterday saying final settlement but he is still not on there.

Any advice would be appreciated

it would appear that he should still be on your claim. You should ring them again and qeury it with them and if you get fobbed off ask to speak to a supervisor. If you still have no joy get down to Citizens Advice and have them ring and hopefully Tax Credits will listen to them!

What exactly do you mean by getting fobbed off? Are you sure your husband would not have put a claim in with your eldest son on it

Who is claiming the child benefit for him?
  • Hello,

Just to look at this from a different angle.

From November, were you in receipt of tax credits for your son?
It is possible, that when he started his AS levels, he was not on the claim.

Tax credits like to remove children from the claim at various points in their life, to avoid overpayment.
If you did not specifically notify HMRC that your son was starting 6th Form, he may have been removed. If this is the case, you can only claim back dated ctc of 3 months.

Phone up HMRC, and specifically ask when your son was removed, explain that he is doing A levels, and where he is doing them.

My daughter was taken off around sept 1st when she was 16, I had to ring them up to advise them that she was still at school as she just started her A levels.

I agree. Just ring them, say he's still in education and you are getting Child Benefit for him. You will then get them till he's 19.
