There and many threads on this subject on the forums, worth a search and read.
Ignore the mega-pixel con, anything above 8 or 10 on a compact is a complete waste of time. Lens is one of the most important factors, and nothing on a compact will come close to a good lens on a DSLR. The sensors are so tiny on compacts that resolving a huge amount of megapixels is physically impossible due to diffraction limits of lenses, even a 15MP DSLR with a cropped sensor can't make full use of it.
Go for a good camera brand such as Canon, Nikon and Panasonic (ok the latter isn't known for cameras, but makes good compacts).
Read comparative reviews in the newsagents.
Personally the Canon Ixus range are excellent compacts, the Powershot G series (9 and 10 especially) are IMO the best "bridge" cameras out there, (I noticed this was mentioned earlier, and I'd highly recommend it - in fact I'm thinking of having one for travel purposes when the DSLR and lenses gets a bit weighty). Having owned a Canon SLR and the DSLR for many years and shooting professional with them, I really can't recommend anything else.0

The Canon IXUS 870 IS is a very good compact camera for £208.
Or, if you can stretch your budget a bit, the Canon G10 for £358, while not the smallest or lightest camera, will take amazing photos while still being small enough to slip in a pocket or bag without too much fuss.0

yep I bought a G10 on Friday - you;d need a big pocket , and strong one at that, to pop it in mind lol. It is a cracking piece of kit though and for what you get a pretty good price tooHate and I do mean Hate my apple Mac Computer - wish I'd never bought the thing
 Do little and often
Please stop using the word "of" when you actually mean "have" - it's damned annoying :mad:0

I took the plunge and bought the G9, personally haven't had chance to use it but mother & father have and they are delighted with it, the colours (esp. the sunset countryside with blues, greens etc. are fantastic.0
