Hi all, i am thinking of moving out of home.
I'm working out in-coming/out-goings at the moment-

I have taken into account the following:-
Monthly Travelcard - £130
Council Tax - £35
Water - £30
Gas/Electric - £30
Phone-Line/Internet - £30
Food/Essentials - £100
Playing-Around Money - £100
Monthly Mobile Phone Bill - £35

I'm on a £16k salary, just looking for a studio/1-bedroom flat, so I would estimate I could get a place £400pcm, do you think that is reasonable?
I have no experience on this kind of stuff, so any feedback will be great

Are they weekly or monthly figures? How are you going to survive on £30 per month for food?

I am not sure you are giving yourself much space to have a 'life'. A room in a shared flat may be cheaper to start with - lower bills etc - and usually shorter notice periods should it prove too much and you want to go and save up a bit more.
    Debt free 4th April 2007.
New house. Bigger mortgage. MFWB after I have my buffer cash in place.

Also where abouts in the country are you? Unless you are in a very cheap area, £16kpa is a very tight budget to be living alone.
  • Sorry, these are monthly figures, and it should read £100 for food

I would consider a shared flat as a second option, but I have had extremely bad experinces living with others and would prefer to be by myself
I am the moment simply want to calculate my expenses and then determine if I can do it.

I live in one of these, your council tax seems low, but for the rest I'd say:
£13 - TV License (first time it's double for 6 months, then you're ahead)
£15-20 - Contents insurance, I use Endsleigh Tenants Insurance that covers me for the LL's stuff too and if I had a breakin I'd get emergency call out for smashed windows or broken locks

You can get a cheaper phone than £35. I was looking the other day at O2, they do one for £5/month which I was umming and aahing about.

On £16k it's doable, but it's survival and not really life.

    You must also remember:
    Xmas presents
    Birthday presents
    Clothes
    Shoes
    Hair cuts
    Random gifts
    Takeaways/eating out
    Holiday/going away/travel
Things you have to buy that you didn't expect. e.g. since I moved in here (fully furnished) I've bought: a PC, clothes airer, breadmaker, few plates, couple of mugs, new tin opener, new freeview box, hairdrier, some storage boxes, couple of new quilt covers, couple of new towels. shower mat .... just stuff that you spot and "need".

Each might not be a lot, but together they might add up to the straw that broke the camel's back.

Council Tax £35 pm - sorry no, even with 25% single occupier discount.
If you are querying your Council Tax band would you please state whether you are in England, Scotland or Wales

I think that you'll have to share, if you can't pay more than that rent? Look on gumtree.com to see what sort of thing is available.

Add to your list, laundry and dry-cleaning.
    YouGov: £50 and £50 and £5 Amazon voucher received;
PPI successfully reclaimed: £7,575.32 (Lloyds TSB plc); £3,803.52 (Egg card); £3,109.88 (Egg loans)
