Reclaiming policy excess through a solicitor?

I recently had a collision on a roundabout when another driver was in the wrong lane and drove into the side of my car. No one stopped as a witness (it is a notorious roundabout for this sort of thing). The car I was in was a loan car from a garage who were doing some repair work on my car. The garage said it would probably end up as a 50/50 and I would just have to pay their excess. However I have had a letter from a solicitor representing the other party saying I was to blame for the accident and I will have to repay their excess for them.
What should I do - do I ignore the letter and leave the insurance companies to sort it out? Or do I now have to do the same and engage a solicitor to counter claim - which would basically be sending them the same letter I have been sent but saying I blame them for the accident and demanding that they pay my excess?

do you have legal cover on your insurance?
if you believe it wasn't your fault, then if you have legal cover on your insurance then your insurance company should fight this for you.
If you don't have legal cover then your insurance company will argue it with the other insurer as they see fit, but may just agree to pay out or agree a split of liability.
You would have to pay to engage a solicitor I would assume. if you don't have legal cover.Indecision is the key to flexibility0 -
Thanks for the reply anniecave. The insurance for the loan car I was driving was the garage's insurance rather than mine, so I guess I need to ask them about the legal expenses issue?0
