Install Ubuntu onto the new machine. It's a free linux based operating system and is very light on resources.

Or for netbooks, try the Netbook Remix: http://www.canonical.com/projects/ubuntu/unr
As for your questions:
a) Yes, they are built with that purpose in mind
b) If you have a PC that you use for most other purposes, a laptop will likely be surplus to requirements
Sounds like a netbook is ideal. Most have 1GB RAM, which is plenty enough to run a browser and messenger.Squirrel! If I tell you who I work for, I'm not allowed to help you. If I don't say, then I can help you with questions and fixing products. Regardless, there's still no secret EU law.
Now 20% cooler0 -
You can get a Dell Mini 10v for just under £200... with Ubuntu. The screen is a little on the small side, but the keys on the keyboard are unusually large for such a small device. Battery life is abysmal, but so long as you don't stray too far from a wall-wart that shouldn't be a problem.
It's not a particularly good example of a netbook, but it would probably suffice.0 -
Netbook is fine for surfing if she can live with a 10 inch screen and no optical drive. No free lunch, and no free laptop0
-
dell sounds ok.. gonna look into that... will keep her happy :-)0
-
Can't you just move the armchair closer to the PC thus saving yourself £200 and keeping her happy at the same time? Its a win win situation0
-
Or get a wireless keyboard and mouse.Ubuntu is an ancient African word, meaning: 'I can't configure Debian'.0

If going for a netbook, I would look at the Samsung NC10 before you opt for the Dell Mini 10.No free lunch, and no free laptop0
-
Just to clarify, it sounds like you are looking for a netbook not a notebook a notebook is just a marketing term for a laptop and if you go into a shop and ask for a notebook you'll end up with the wrong thing.0

thats it lum.. only for surfing the net.. so its a netbook :-)
