Underlining & Bold-minor problem

I did not renew Office after the six months expired as I just type the occasional letter in Notepad. Excel would be useful at times though. Anyway, I was just typing a brief note which included a column of figures and I found I could not use the keyboard shortcuts i.e. CTRL+B and CTRL+U to highlight something or underline it. Why would this be? Is. it just a case of the shortcuts not being available in Notepad? I'm using a Sony laptop and Vista.

Notepad is an electronic equivalent of scrap paper. It has none of the features usually associated with word processors. It's nothing to do with your machine or operating system.Try saying "I have under-a-pound in my wallet" and listen to people react!0

I also use a Sony laptop, which has Wordpad. With this programme, you can use Bold, Underline, etc.
Hope that helps0 -

Yes, I will now download Open Office. To be honest, on my last computer I found Open Office was a bit too sophisticated for me.0 -

Did you get the full Office system with your laptop? Wordpad is not available on this one. It's the VA10.
To Taffybiker: I agree, Notepad is pretty useless. My trouble is that I am always looking for an easy way out. I certainly will not buy Office.0 -
Initially my PC had Works installed, I already had a copy of Office 2007, which I installed.0

There's nothing wrong with taking the easy option if there is one, and certainly nothing wrong choosing not to purchase unnecessary software.
I would persevere with Open Office.
If you just want a word processor then I found this:
http://www.abisource.com/download/ but I have not used it and cannot vouch for it.Try saying "I have under-a-pound in my wallet" and listen to people react!0 -

I'll go look see. Maybe it is on here somewhere.
I'm not a Techie as you might have gathered but in the Times at weekend there was a "TECH TIP" in the section called IN GEAR about being able to see your email offline by downloading something called Google Gears or Yahoo Zimbra desktop. I downloaded the Google one but now don't know what to do with it even after reading the instructions. I access AOL email from Firefox but it's not really satisfactory. If anyone is interested I just found in Firefox-Tools, Gears settings. Sorry for going off at a tangent.0
