  • I use a flannel or cut up old towels which I wet with water either from the tap or from the bottle of water I carry to drink from.

In the early days, I used to take a bottle of water and a small tub out with me but then I switched to using wipes when out as it didn't seem worth the effort for the amount of time we were out. At home we used cotton wool and flannels dipped in water but eventually stopped using cotton wool so just use flannels now.

  • i used to use water is a small travel spray bottle and some re-usable wipes. Now I use Huggies pure when out as my baby is now 14 months and her bum is fine with them.

my LO is two weeks old and already i have noticed that when i use conventional baby wipes his bottom gets red but when i use cotton wool and plain water its settles down. the only thing is when i am out and about, water isnt always available so i was wondering what others use in this situation.

We used wipes for our little ones but before use, we rinsed them under cold water. You'd be amazed what colour the water turns when all the perfume and chemical is rinsed out. Neither of out two boys have had any nappy rash because of this (but cringe now about the damage those dirty things do to the enviroment)....

Try not to worry - it's not your fault you gave birth to boys.
Many of us did just the same. :D

Poundland has these 5 cloths for £1 in the baby section. You can put pre-soaked ones in a small leak-proof tub (I put the tub in a plastic bag incase it leaks).

Johnsons gentlest? no way! they've got nasty fragrances etc!

I used to use reusable wipes with either water or camomile tea but since I've discovered that Sainsburys own wipes don't have parabens I've used their fragrance free ones
  • When I was a baby I used to get very bad nappy rash and it worked out that I was allergic to lanolin. From then on my mum always used cotton wool and water for me, as well as my brothers and sisters. She used to wet the cotton wool before she went out and keep it in a little container.

You could try www.cheekywipes.com - I gave some to a green friend as a new baby gift and she loves them!
I like to use wipes myself after using the loo and might get some of these for myself.
Think I might hide them out of the bathroom when people come round cos they might wonder whaere the baby has come from especially as I am in my 50's now.

  • I've heard good things about Cheeky wipes (mentioned above) but it strikes me as quite expensive for what it is.

I use a small waterproof 'Monkey Foot' bag (containing fleecy wipes). I just dampen the wipes before I go out and keep them in the bag. They work really well with washable nappies (as the dirty wipes can just be stored in a separate bag with the nappies and washed. Not sure how it would work if you're using disposables though.

The bags come in some fab designs - take a look at:
