Uni student travelling from Wolverhampton to Stoke via train

Hi all can anybody offer me any tips?

I am starting University at Stoke in September and will probably travel by rail. I will be at uni 12 hours a week but im not sure how many days that this is spread over as yet until I get my timetable in August.

I need to know the cheapest way to travel to Stoke-On-Trent from Wolverhampton. I am aware that I can get a student discount card which will give me 1/3 off but the tickets can go up to £15 a day depending on what time I will have to travel.

I looked into a season travel ticket but I would be travelling through both Central and northern rail so I would need a season ticken from both lines. I would be willing to buy a year pass if it would save me money in the long run. Can anybody offer me any tips or ideas.

Thanks

    ???

Central no longer exist and Northern go nowhere near Stoke so I'm not sure what you are trying to say there.

You need ONE season ticket - between Wolverhampton and Stoke on Trent. £187.10 a month or £1948 a year. Valid on any train run by any operator beween the two. CrossCountry and London Midland operate most services - not sure if Virgin get a look in or not.

Depending on how many days a week/month/year you need to travel daily tickets may be cheaper. An anytime day return - no restrictons - is £12.40. Where did £15 come from?

A YP railcard has a minimum fare of £12 before 1000am so it's not going to make much difference

I looked at buying a season ticket for west midlands travel which included bus and rail but this didn't allow me to travel as far north as Stoke, I appologise for being a bit vague and unprecise. As for £15 again I was being vague. Thank you for pointing me in the right direction. Who would I contact to purchase these season tickets and if I purchased a YP railcard could I use that againt the price of a season ticket and get 1/3 off. I assume I would have to contact CrossCountry or London Midland directly.

    Thanks for your reply

season tickets are valid on any route.

it would usually list cheaper options like (not via...)

for 7 days it would be £48.70

as for using bus aswell.. why do u need it?!

You dont need a bus for the stoke end as the train station is literally 30 seconds from the main campus.
  • Unless you are going from Wolves to Stoke everyday during peek times then daily tickets with a YP card would be the cheapest option.

Platform 2 from Wolves and 35mins or so to S-O-T

Actually, Northern services run regularly between Stoke and Manchester, although this doesn't help the OP

You just need to go into the ticket office of your local station - if you pick a quiet time (say the middle of the day) then they'll be able to take you through the options available and tell you what they would all cost. You won't be able to use a YP railcard to get any discount on a season ticket (because a season ticket will allow you to travel at any time of day, which a YP railcard doesn't).

You also probably won't get a YP discount if you have to travel at peak times - again, the ticket office will be able to give you details on any time restrictions for that particular route.

Until you know how many days a week you are going to have to do the journey and at what times it's not going to be possible for anyone to tell you what the cheapest option is going to be.

As blue_haddock says, if you'll be at the main Stoke campus rather than Burslem you can just walk from the station, as it's right next to it.

A YP card IS valid in peak hours subject to a minimum fare - as stated above it would save 40p a day on the anytime fare at peak hours, or about £4 a day if you can travel off peak after 10am. It doesn't offer savings on a season ticket.

You buy the season ticket at a station. Any station, but Wolverhampton will be more clued up than say Brighton for this journey. Which train company it is is normally irrelevant and definitely is for this journey.
