scratches - how much will they affect the value of my car

I have a hyundai coupe which has a few fairly deep scratches on the paint work. I'm looking to buy a newish car so I'm thinking of trading it in. It's going to cost around £150 to have it fixed - do you think i'd recoup this when trading the car in?. Clearly, if I went private it would be worthwhile doing it but I imagine dealers fix minor gripes before selling so I'm not sure if it would be worth doing?

Like you say, if selling private then yes, but dealer trade in not worth the bother, it's not as if they would give you anymore for the car, or even do a good deal on what they are selling to you.0 -
If it's going to cost the dealer £150 to fix before he can put the vehicle on the forecourt, then expect the dealer to knock that off what you'd otherwise get.
The only thing is the dealer may only knock off the expected cost to him which would be cheaper than what it would cost you to get the repair done. But times are hard and the dealer will know what it would cost you.
Only if the car you are trading in is such a shed that the dealer has no intention of ever putting it on his forecourt would it possibly not affect the trade in value."Now to trolling as a concept. .... Personally, I've always found it a little sad that people choose to spend such a large proportion of their lives in this way but they do, and we have to deal with it." - MSE Forum Manager 6th July 20100 -
Dealers usually pass the car on unless it was sold by them and is under 3 years old, have a word with the dealer he may advise you to sell it privately as he doesn't want to offend you with his trade in price but then again it is a buyers market.0
