light switch problem

Hi all
I have a double dimmer switch operating living room ceiling light and also kitchen light (open plan room) - yesterday the living room light stopped working (not bulb!) so I swapped around connections on switch and it then worked but kitchen didn't so I guessed it must be a switch problem (over 20 years old) - I've now bought a replacement non-dimmer switch but this has (2 x) 3 connections (L1,com,L2) and all I have hanging from the wall is red and black wires x 2 (for each light?) - so I'm not sure how to re-connect - also the remaining downstairs lights on the same circuit refuse to work with no switch connected! I have a feeling that I need a different type of switch....any ideas please!!

Hi baldelectrician
Thanks for tips - managed to sort it; fuse had blown! Not sure why, as it was OK before changing the wall switch, but easily fixed for a change
