House Removal Costs

We are hoping to exchange contracts shortly on the sale of our house and will be moving into rented accomodation. (We are just starting to look for rented accomodation, but don't want to commit to anything until exchange). Does anyone have any removal companies they would recommend? (We are moving from the Portsmouth, Hampshire area to Bridport, Dorset area). Is it best to get a removal company local to Portsmouth or Dorset, or better to go with a national company? Any hints and tips on arranging removals would be greatly appreciated. We are assuming it is going to be cheaper to rent a slightly larger property (3 beds with garage) rather than rent storage space for furniture and boxes as storage costs seem extremely expensive - unless someone knows different?!?. Thanks

shop around - i moved last october and finally used a small local firm who were half the price of a national company. do ask for a copy of their public liability insurance certificate before signing a contract with them. i got them to pack for me as well - for an additional £80 it took away all the stress of my packing everything up - and in any case they would not have insured any breakages as they did not do the packing.

We live in the north west and are paying £440 incl vat for removals from a 3 bed semi. We are packing ourselves. However, we are only moving about 1 mile. We also have some stuff in a SafeStore unit which costs £100 a month, so it is probably better to rent somewhere slightly larger. HTH.
