You don't need planning permission unless you are in a conservation area (or the door will face directly onto a main road) you will however, need a building warrant...If it looks like a duck, and quacks like a duck, we have at least to consider the possibility that we have a small aquatic bird of the family anatidae on our hands

so who provides me with the warrant?0

For us living south of the border, is this warrrant the equivalent of Building Control approval in England, or something different? No free lunch, and no free laptop0

Erm, not quite, a building warrant is legal permission to START any building works, it must be got in advance. If you started any work before it is granted, you can get charged a small fortune or even rejected completely.
For building control approval, you need only apply for it 48 hours in advance of work commencing and you don't need to wait for it to be granted before you start work. (unless you are building from scratch)

Thanks, I assume this warrant only applies to structural work (in the same way as English Building Control does)?
Don't quite see the parallel, as BC is intended to check that the work is being done to a certain minimum standard. How can this be done if in Scotland it's granted before work starts. You could submit plans and then build something different. No free lunch, and no free laptop0 -
I don't think I explained it very well, even though it has to be granted beforehand, they will still check during the building process and when work is completed, you then need to apply for a completion certificate. Have a look at the link I posted, it explains it much better than I ever could.
It covers all structural work, but also applies if you were changing a full window or external door and frame...If it looks like a duck, and quacks like a duck, we have at least to consider the possibility that we have a small aquatic bird of the family anatidae on our hands
