JSA Tax Credits HELP!!

My boyfriend has been made redundant and has applied for Job Seekers Allowance but has been sent a letter saying he has not paid enough class 1 national insurance contributions. He has worked straight for a large company for the past 4 and a half years so dont understand how he couldnt have paid enough NI? surely it was calculated by them!!!! apart from having a few sick days off (in which case he would still have got more then the lower limit threshold per week i believe) he has worked straight for the 4.5 years.
Does this sound like a cockup or could something like this happen?
Any help would be MAJORLY appreciated!!!
We are obviously going to write to JSA and appeal the decision but i'd like to underdstand it all a bit more incase we need to fight our corner. Unfortunatly BF hasnt kept his P60's which i guess would tell us his contributions

Has he worked full time for that period? And is it employed earners employment? ie not self employed, paying class 1 NI?
Seems strange, if so. The lack of P60s may complicate matters. Can he contact his former employer and request details of his earnings/NI payments?0 -

Yes he has worked full time, other then days off when sick. He is not self employed and has been emplyed by a largeish company. As far as we can see NI contributions were deducted from his last few wage slips as normal. We are going to ask them if they have any details of his wages - hope they are helpful!0 -

Then it does sound as though a mistake has been made. Whether that be by the employer, HMRC or JCP is anyone's guess. Gather as much information as you can and ask for it to be looked at again.0 -

This does happen from time to time. Normally all you would have to do is send in the 2 relevant P60s and that would sort it out.
As he has not got his P60s then his March paylsips from the end of the two relevant tax years would do instead.
If he has not got those either then perhaps he can get duplicates/info from his ex employer.
I know it is of no help to him but to anyone else reading this ALWAYS keep your P60s. It actually says on them not to throw them away. And of course keep your payslips for at least a couple of years.0
