dieselhead the point is that the Insurance Company and Credit Hire Company should explain to their customer what they were doing. They should also explain to them they are signing a credit agreement and that sometimes there can be a chance that they may have to pay the costs which can run into many thousands of pounds in some rare circumstances.

If you had been one of the people asked to pay a bill of £5000 for a credit hire vehicle when they could not recover it from the third party you would not be so complimentry about credit hire companies.

They should explain to the customer exactly what is happening, any potential problems and the implications of signing the credit agreement.

If its a Drive Assist car you also have the chance of them hitting you for a bill for a few hundred pound for existing damage to the car

Seems like best advice would be to take insurance without any hire car cover, rent a car yourself if required if you have a not your fault claim and take your chances with claiming this cost back from the insurer of the person responsible (using the legal protection cover they invariably include)
  • I have exactly the same problem.

Drive Assist rang me today to ask if I was aware that the agreement was a credit hire agreement when they gave me the car...in a word no. They said I (or my insurance company) would only end up paying if I was 'lying' about the circumstances of the accident.

I was insured with DL and RAc recovered the car. Drive assist called me from RAC in fact and when I asked I was very clear that they would pass the cost to the third party...or my insurers. In fact my insurers have been liasing with Drive assist (It would seem) to see if they want their costs added on to the cost against the third party.

Need I add the car was returned to drive assist on the 10th August 2007 and I heard nothing from them until today asking me about my obligations. The car insuirance claim is also not settled and needless to say im no longer a DL customer!

If the liability is clear cut, then cut out your insurance company and call the 3rd party insurance company direct- they will happily sort out a courtesy car at their expense. Otherwise, yes, rent the cheapest crappiest car you can find.
