I think the HSBC Internet banking system runs a checksum on any payments where the sort code and account number are entered manually to check they are valid - otherwise it immediately flags up the account details as invalid.

However, if this is a payment to a credit card company, I assume it was made to one of the organisations for which HSBC stores the sort code/account information for anyway.

Hence, any error will be in the credit card number (assuming the credit payee was chosen from the HSBC list of card issuers..

I'd go for the Credit Cards one - 08457 28 38 48 - as assuming the sort code and account number were correct, it'll be sitting in an account managed by the credit card people, as they just won't have been able to allocate it to your own account, as the 16-digit card number was wrong.
