hi there, i'm new to this whole motability thing.. i have higher rate mobility on my dla, but i'm a wee bit comfused.
i think having a car would be a great help for me, but i can't physically drive, however my partner could do this. is this allowed/ok if i don't drive?
what is the average price for a car on motability? what do you pay? do they take the payments straight off your dla? i read the motability website but my brain is a bit wonky today so i'm still unsure about all this! :P
i'm not looking for anything fancy anyway, just a wee 3 door car to get me around.
now, since i don't drive, i don't know what having a car entails.. i know that you need to pay insurance, m.o.t's and tax.. is there anything else? anything extra because you're disabled?
thanks for any help!! :]

Hi there - I'm sure someone more knowledgeable will be along to help, but as far as I know, I think you can nominate someone to drive the car if you don't have a licence yourself. I seem to think I had a friend who got a very nice Renault Modus through the scheme, but she didn't have a driving licence.
There's quite a comprehensive question and answer section on the www.motability.co.uk site - hope it helps and good luck!Overpay!0 -
Hi Millyaulait, I get HRM same as you, and I don't drive either. My husband is the nominated driver. The money you pay for the car depends on what type/model you get, ours is a Vauxhall Zafira and it's £49 per week.
You don't have to pay insurance, road tax or MOT, that's all in with the price. The car is serviced every year, and if anything needs doing they will lend you another if you need one. Hope this helps, if you need any more info please ask, I will help if I can.
PS, the payment for it is taken off your DLA money.0 -

Forgot to say, you get a new car every 3 years. Some dealers will let you buy the car from them after 3 years.0

would this work if my disabled partner nominated his son to drive for him? how many hours would be have to drive him about and could he use the car alone without him??????? not sure how it works so gonna go look in the link to....0

The car must only be used for the disabled persons benefit. The driver could, say, go in the car to pick up a prescription, but as a rule the disabled person should be in the car. The car must not be used for say, the nominated driver to go to work in, or as a general "run around" for the nominated driver. Anyone can be a nominated driver, providing they have a license. Hope this helps, C.C.L.0
