Which credit card??

I've read all the stuff, but I still dont' know!

Basically my situation is this!

In the next year or two I want to buy a house (hopefully!!!)

Right now I don't have any credit rating though!

I have a large overdraft but no loans

I rent a room from friends and all the bills are in their names as it's in their house, as is the council tax

My phone is billed to my work address, so probably doesn't count.

Obviously no credit cards, no store cards

I don't need one with a good balance transfer, cos I have no balance to transfer.

I think what I would do with it would be buy my monthly travel card on it and have that amount set as the amount I will pay off each month, so it won't matter about the interest rates.

Could anyone advise what would be best.

I'll only be spending £100 a month on it, which I will pay off monthly, ideally I'd like a 'present' for opening it!!!lol!!

Any advise appreciated

    Hi,

If you have no credit rating it can be difficult to get a mortgage as when they do a credit search on you they haven't heard of you! This can also apply when apllying for a credit card. It happened to me when I was (much) younger, the first credit card I applied for was rejected - I felt a bit put out at the time - but the second card I applied for was no problem at all. I imagine this might have been because there was a credit search on my report which obviously gave me some brownie points.

Anyway back to your message. Firstly before applying for a credit card or mortgage make sure you are on the electrol roll for where you live, you have little chance of getting anywhere if you are not on it.

I am not sure why you mention your phone is billed to your work address, I am guessing you are suggesting it might be needed as proof of address, if so get it changed to where you live. Do you get bank statements sent there? if so they could be used.

As for spending £100/month on it, you can set up a direct debit to clear the entire balance each month, that way you would never have any late fees.

Now as for which card, a lot here depends on your lifestyle, I have a Goldfish card which has a reward scheme, but if you are only spending £100/month it would take a while to build up enough points to be worthwhile (I spend over £1000/month - the joys of having a wife and kids!). So I am guessing you want the best freebie for getting a credit card. In Martin's recent letter he suggested an Amazon credit card which would give you £15 Amazon vouchers which would be good if you shop at Amazon, and also Lastminute.com credit card which gives a £20 Lastminute.com voucher (never shopped with them so don't know much about the site.)

If you fly much then Ryanair have a credit card which (I think) gives you a free flight.

If you are thinking of keeping the card for years you might like to think of one with a reward scheme or cashback.

Just remember, you may not get the first card you apply for!

If this is a mobile phone them many banks will not accept this as proof of address (as OP has shown they can be sent to any adddress!)
