Student support for my fees

Im on a student placement and totally forgot about student fees.( why should i have to pay them???) I still have to pay half fees (£570). Anyway i found my LEA forms and sent them off last week, just to get fee support, nothing to do with the loan. Ok so maybe im 10 months late........ does anyone reckon i will still get support towards my fees?

The university have now shut down my email and i cant take books out because of unpaid fees, whoops!

Thanks

Sounds like you are registered as a part time student? So are you even eligible for fee support?

I don't know whether you will get your fees paid for this year. Do you get your fees paid on normal years? If so, you might be eligible. Get in touch with university in the mean time and tell them what has happened.

When I was on industrial placement I didnt get any finacnial support with fees because my salary for my placement was too high. I was eligible for a student loan but it was only the absolute basic amount (despite living away from 'home').

Definitely worth talking to the uni, phone if you can't get in to see them. They may know whether you are likely to be too late or not, and if you ARE they may be willing to arrange an instalment plan.

The fees are due because you are still a registered student. If you run into any problems presumably an academic supervisor will be on hand to help. You're probably getting a visit at some point anyway. And someone will be assessing whether you 'pass' the requirements for this year. There is still work going on on your behalf, whether you're aware of it or not.

  • Hey I totally get what you are saying about the fees.

I am in my final year of my degree and I paid £550 fees at the beginning of the year which was all I needed to pay in total. Then my Dad lost his job and so I spent a few pounds phoning the Student loans people and my LEA trying to get them to look at the finances so maybe I could get some of my money back. I should be able to claim back the full £550 but they have recently sent me an update letter saying that my status has changed and now i need to pay the full £1175 or whatever it is and that my loan amounts have gone down by a third!! I phoned them and they denied getting a letter from my parents with their updated details. I have phoned my LEA and they are trying to sort it out for me and in the meantime i have to go to my uni and apply for the hardship fund just to keep me ticking over until they decide to sort out my loan payment!

So I have gone from an 'OK' position where I could easily cope, to a totally out of my depth situation. What I want to know is why did they change my status so I am worse off? Surely the person doing the changing would notice that my loan has gone down and payments due gone up by half....

Anyway, my advice, is keep on going at it because you can't get what you dont ask for (although so far this has turned out for the worst for me!!)

Well last night my forms came back for my student support for just the fees part. Mum forgot to sign something thats why. So it looks like even though im about 10 months late i could still get support :). Also my new forms have arrrived for 06/07 so this time im going to fill these in straight away so no slip ups are made like this time. Although for 06/07 i will need the full loan as im not working. Thanks for the advice everyone, im going to call the uni on Monday and ask if i pay some fees and the LEA turn round and may them all can i claim my part back etc

They will still assess your forms as if they were filled in on time. My OH is on a sandwich placement - his half fees were paid by his LEA for him.

Might take a while at this time of year though cos they will be getting all of nexts years forms sent back now.
