using a laptop abroad for emails

I am going to portugal for 3 weeks this summer and the only way i will not get fired is if I can access/answer my emails while I am there. Short of finding an internet cafe (we are not really near any) does anyone have any ideas how I can go online without bankrupting myself. someone suggested buy a local portuguese dongle from vodaphone shop out there - anyone ever tried this/know if it works?? any ideas??? thanks
dd

The dongle will work on exactly the same principle as the ones here. And they work. Question is how much are they. You might need to go on Ebay or something to have a look on PAYG one, as brand new ones here cost a lot (the purchase of dongle itself).

If you buy a PAYG one, at least you will know how quickly you are bankrupting yourself-it will not be cheap. You are looking at pounds per MB (NOT per GB).

What about using remote desktop to your home machine or using the email web portal to your emails.

    No laptop needed then.

What's the OP supposed to use to run the remote desktop then?

Personally I would suggest getting a cheap PAYG dongle (such as the £5 one from Three at the moment - see other threads on this site). Then you can unlock it for free (again, see other threads).

Once in Portugal, you can try to buy a PAYG SIM card with data access, find the connection details (Access Point, username, password etc), and put it into your dongle.

Based on an internet search (and not personal experience) I would suggest that the best option would be Uzo (http://www.uzo.pt/pt/tarifario/pagina.uzo) which costs €0.99 per day for up to 10MB, then €0.01 per MB after that.

An alternative is the Livre Bonus SIM from Optimus (http://www.optimus.pt/Particulares/Servicos/tarifariosinternet) which costs €0.99 per day (10MB max) or €7.62 per month (100MB max).

The data limits are pretty small but should be enough for email access (as long as you're not downloading large attachments).

I don't know how strict they are in Portugal about selling SIM cards - in some European countries you need to supply proof of address or an ID card.

Not according to his original post-that's why he needs to take his laptop and get a dongle.

Most mobile phones have the functionality of sending/receiving emails. Perhaps that would be easier?
