Laptop problems

Hi All

I wonder if anybody has encountered this problem before. I have an Advent laptop, runnning Windows Vista, a few months ago after installing a windows update my laptop would not boot up and kept going into like a restore mode, (Tech Guys?), and would just continue restarting. Eventually I managed a system restore and this resolved the problem. I have disabled windows update to avoid a repeat of this problem. Funnily enough my brother had the same problem on his laptop after running windows update:

After my system restore I noticed that Firefox ceased to work and could not gain a connection to the internet. Since then programs such as any anti virus, skype etc cannot connect to the internet, if any body has encountered this and perhaps knows how to solve it I would be much obliged as I cannot update my antivirus, connect to skype etc

I think the IE8 caused some problems in the past.

How do you connect to the internet and what comes up on the screen when firefox starts?

It my be something simple as the auto detection of the connection to the internet is unticked.

Sorry writing this on a Mac as my Vista PC is in bits at the moment so can't check the terminology

I came across a similar thing with a Toshiba (not that brand makes the slightest bit of difference), it just kept restarting without getting into windows.

It eventually turned out that the system had a virus or some sort, MS update patched over a virus file leaving the system unable to start!
NAV has done this a few times too, by deleting virus files that are embedded into the OS.

Your internet connection problem is probably something to do with Internet Explorer, did you know that IE's setting's are used to set the system wide internet connection setting's?
