i have been tarting cards for a while now and have amassed a number of cards that i no longer use.
what is the best way to cancel a credit card and make sure they close your account?

I beleive that they almost always ask for you to send your request in writing. I would give them a call before hand just to confirm this, but i have always had to send a signed request to them.wins 2008: nada

In my experience a phone call is usually enough. You will be asked to cut up your card to destroy it. You should also ask for written confirmation that your account has been closed and take note of who and where you spoke to.

John is right, in the past I've had at least 2 cards companies who didn't close the account when I requested. Now I do exactly that and it's been fine. One thing - before you close an account do check that they aren't going to offer you a deal at 0% with no transfer fee, as I once got an unexpected extra £10k for my stooze pot!0
