So are people expected to ftp via the command prompt to get the installation files for a browser?

    No.

OEM's will be free to bundle whichever combination of browser(s) they deem appropriate. I guarantee at least one of these will be Internet Explorer in order for the OEM to minimise calls to their support line about why there is no ‘internet’ on the person’s new computer.

Those purchasing retail editions will more than likely find IE as an optional update through Windows Update or Welcome Centre.

    Nail, hit, head.

It's for computer manufacturers to decide how they ship the OS on their hardware. Not for noob users to decide, thats why you goto people like PC World, Dell, Toshiba, etc.

Anyone who knows what they are doing will have retail and will be able to sort it for themselves.
