Cheap house valuation from Chartered Surveyor

As I'm in a Shared Ownership house (60%/40%) that I am looking to remortgage, I have to get a valuation from a registered Chartered Surveyor before the housing company that owns the 40% agrees to the remortgage. After that, I can scout around for mortgages.
The chartered surveyor's fees seem to be £250 or more. Is there any alternative cheaper way to get a valuation, or can anyone recommend a good value surveyor? I resent having to pay over £250 before I can even find out if we can afford to remortgage!

Surveyors fees are often based on what the price of the property is & the fee scales reflect this. In essence, the cheaper a property the lower the surveyor fee, the more expensive the property, the higher the fee.
Fee's are usually set in bands, ie Property up to £150k one price then up to £250k the next price band & so on.
All you can really do it ring round surveyors & get a few quotes. If all are roughly the same then you know you've got no option but to pay that amount. The bigger the bargain, the better I feel.
I should mention that there's only one of me, don't confuse me with others of the same name.0
