How NOT to save money when filling up

It's 7:00 in the morning and I'm tired after a couple of nights sleeping badly. I filled up with petrol (£50) and on the way home the car starts mis-behaving. When I get home I check my receipt and find I've filled up with unleaded petrol instead of diesel !! :o

How things can change overnight -

February 06 - With self control I will be debt free in three years (apart from my mortgage!)
Total - £25,000  Estimated Debt-Free date - January 2009 :j :rotfl:

July 06 - Made redundant and given early retirement
Total - £0 and replaced the car.

Now looking for a job to top-up the pension. :T

That is a VERY bad mistake !
It is not just the wasted money of the fuel, the petrol will have damaged parts of your engine/fuel system beyond repair. It could cost a LOT of money to put right.
Do Not drive the car further. Get advice from a reputable garage immediately.
    Best of luck !

Fortunately, one of my friends runs a garage so I'm going to call him and see if he can help me out.

Telegraph article on misfuelling Sorry this article is somewhat alarmist. I think if you have an older diesel you are more likely to get away with it.

I did exactly the same thing with our new car, a week after we bought it! Luckily my brother was in the car with me at the time and as soon as the car felt jerky I realised and he told me to pull over straight away.

Cost me just over £150 to have to completely flushed through, although the garage owner said a lot of people make it worse by trying to fill it up with the correct diesel/petrol which only adds to the problem.

Good luck and hope there hasnt been too much damage done.

Just remembered, we did notice a leak in the fuel pump a few weeks later. This I'm told was caused by the petrol burning the rubber seal away????

Anyway we managed to get it done on the cars warranty.
