Leave your line rental with BT.

Sign up online for a 18185 account. Calls to UK 01/02/03 numbers which you can't make for free on your BT calls package (you have at least their Unlimited Weekend Plan so such calls are certainly inclusive at weekends) can be made via 18185 for 5p each, regardless of duration.

Calls to mobiles will be 5p connection and 6p/minute weekdays and 5p/minute weekends.

Calls to Italian landlines will be 5p connection and 1p/minute. Avoid calling Italian mobiles via 18185 though (they charge 14p/minute), use the MSE International CallChecker to find a cheaper (gateway) provider instead.

P.S. You may find some points in the post under the HERE link in my signature below of use too.
Time has moved on (much quicker than it used to - or so it seems at my age) and my previous advice on residential telephony has been or is now gradually being overtaken by changes in the retail market. Hence, I have now deleted links to my previous 'pearls of wisdom'. I sincerely hope they helped save some of you money.

Post office homephone will offer FREE calls to italy at weekend and also FREE calls to uk mobiles at weekends. If anyone else you know on Post office homephone you can call them free of charge at any time. Pick up a leaflet at local post office
