Natwest Online - Date Discrepancy

I have a NatWest Current Account with a £150 overdraft facility.
I was expecting a Child Tax Credits payment on the 9th of June. I checked during the early hours of the 9th (about 1.30am) and the payment hadn't been made. I was still £6 away from going past my overdraft limit. Nothing was showing in the 'clearing' area at the base of the screen.
I checked again at about 4.30 am and the CTC payment had been made.
Upon checking my online statement a few days later it shows several payments made from the account on the 8th of June which means that my account balance going into the 9th was -£192.
How can it be that this balance didn't show at the time? I've had charges in the past when I'm sure that something similar has happened, but this time I am absolutely ONE HUNDRED PERCENT SURE of the facts. The payments weren't in the 'clearance' display and I was shown as inside my overdraft limit.

Was it possibly interest charges or other charges that knocked you over? Natwest don't apply the charges to your account until the end of the business day that they say they will be applied, essentially meaning that the will appear the next day but be dated for the previous day.0
