Emission light on zaffera

Hi, my emission light has come on today on my car, this has happened before but by the time i got to a garage it had gone off, so the garage said he didn't want to charge me anything if there didn't really need anything doing as it could have been just a dippy light. That was over a year ago now, does anyone know if this could be serious if i dont get it checked out.

For a petrol Astra, the following is true:
If the light flashes when you drive, and does not stop flashing if you slow down, then if you don't stop immediately the catalyst may need replacement. It's ok to drive the car with the emissions light illuminated but not flashing.

Which is the emision light? Is it the one with the engine on? When that lights up on ours it usually goes back of if we top up the oil.

thanks for that, i was considering checking the oil, so i'll do it tomorrow.

If it's the emissions light it could be a spark plug or glow plug that is duff. Or EGR valve...
