    isplumm,

I was trying not to post on this thread because I work for Natwest. i can guarntee(sp) this isn't something that has been passed down from above and will be an isolated incident to the branch. I would probably complain to the branch so that the staff member can be retrained.

I just felt I had to mention about the security checks etc because i also agree with them.

I went to pay in a cheque and the woman at the counter said that Natwest are, too improve security, checking accounts more often and when they are checking your account you cannot access any of your money. She said that I needed to get an emegency card in case my account was being checked so that I could still pay for things, would I like her to set this up for me for free.

'Emergency card?', I said, 'so I'd still be able to access my money, I'd just need a different card?'

She replied by saying that Natwest do a free emergency card which she could set up - the Natwest Mastercard.

'Woah, hang on a minute', says I, 'you're saying I should get your "free" CREDIT CARD so I can pay for things whilst you stop me accessing my acount?'

Not exactly free if it's a credit card! How can Natwest stop you accessing your account and then promote their credit card as a 'free emergency card'?!?

Did you ask to speak to a manager there and then about closing your account as you didn't like being told you couldn't have access to your own money? And that was nothing to how you felt about being dishonestly coerced into into signing up for credit?

The only reason banks do this is because we let them. If everyone complained like that whenever it happened I bet they'd soon stop.

If your card was cloned would you be hapier for the fraudster to get away with your money without any additional checks from the bank?

My card WAS cloned actually... I didnt mind them making the checks but what I DID mind was that it only happened when I had the Step account (same card, Solo) it didnt happen when I had the Current Plus.

Thats the point I was making! I had nothing to hide so they could make the checks if they wanted but all Im saying is that its one rule for one... wheres the sense in that????:confused:and although A&L dont ring for auth they picked up straight away when my card was cloned.

Have you tried posting a letter at the post office lately? while the queue piles up mutteringly behind you, the sales person wil say brightly - Have you thought about having a Post Office Credit Card, it has lots of advantages?"
(Yes I suppose it does if you really like winding up about 40 people at once!)
No doubt my bank would be the same if it hadn't been converted to an atrium with lots of machines (you have to go upstairs if you want to process anything over an actual counter)

It's not based on the type of account but your spending habbits and they can change with time the same as the type of account you may have.
