The reason I said usually, is that there are always exceptions to the rules ;)

e.g. A red triangle saying give way is mandatory. Drivers must give way to traffic on a major road.

A hexagon sign with a red background and white lettered 'Stop' is also a mandatory order to stop & give way.

National speed limit applies and minimum speed limit signs do not have a red circle, but are mandatory.

    etc

Sorry thought we were talking about temporary speed limit changes.
I started with nothing and I am proud to say I still have most of it left.

I always though the 20mph was (at least in part) to bed the chippings into the tar. If you go too fast, the chippeds are dislodged before they have fully set into the tar, reducing the effectiveness of the road repair.

its incase you need to stop suddenly, skidding on loose chippings at 60 mph could and probably would spell disaster. ive skidded on them at low speed,it can happen quite easily.

Just as a pointless aside, I learned a couple of weeks ago that STOP signs in nearly all countries are Hexagon shaped, and that they are the only sign of that shape. The reason being that is the sign were to be defaced, or faded, or covered in snow, etc., then whatever country youre driving in, you should still be able to make out the shape and therefore know what is is.

    Ok, useless post over!

Thats the same reason as give way signs are the only road sign thats an inverted triangle, you learn that as part of your theory training.
