What to do at night in Luxor?

I'm travelling to Luxor in Egypt in July. It'll be hot, I know!!

I have lots of ideas for what to do in the day, but have heard that the town is fairly quiet at night and that entertainment tends to be in the hotels.

I don't like loud music/disco type places anyway, but wonder if anyone can make suggestions of what to do/where to visit/places to eat/bars etc....

Thanks in advance for your help.

Annie

Go to the Old Winter Palace for a meal and just soak up the charm of the place and people watch.

Do try one of the buffets at the Winter Palace they are great and some nights there is free entertainment of a high standard. Also afternoon tea in the old Winter Palace. Across the road down the stairs and I think its turn right there is (or was) a great bakery lovely coffee and cakes. I wish I was going back

Go to the sound and light show at Karnak temple if its still going on. You can get a horse and cart from your hotel for a few quid.

If you fancy a bit of "home" food, the best restaurant in the whole of Luxor is "7 Ways 7 Days" (on the same main road as the Sonesta St George, parallel to the Nile, just a bit further down - in the direction away from Karnak Temple). It's on the first floor above the street and does fantastic food (but not egyptian!).

For Egyptian food, on the fork off of the main strip behind the temple is a garden restaurant that did a nice line in roast pidgeon! But there's a fair bit of hassle to buy stuff from the stalls outside...

It is hot in July, but that's the time of year we always went! Sailing in a felucca on the Nile was great in the early evening, ask a taxi driver to give you an evening tour of local villages - there might even be a wedding going on! Just be careful about booking any tours to the archaeological ruins that mean you are there miday - it is unbearably hot out there.

    Thanks for these suggestions.

Has anyone tried just hiring a fellucca boat (with someone to sail it!) and going off for an evening? Is it safe to do this (there will be two of us)?

Is it possible to visit the temples etc in the evening, other than for the special light shows?

My only trip in a felluca involved getting stuck on the sandbanks (the Nile was very low) eventually getting back to where we started from and being blackmailed by the guy steering it for more baksheesh before he landed us - a positive attitude on my part soon got him to change his mind - they like to 'try it on'. Make sure the nile is deep enough!!

Did you hire it and sail yourselves, or with a guide?

I'd have a meal then an early night so you can get up early to see the sights before a) it gets too hot & b) the coach parties arrive
