The reason so many laptops have a short life is because people do use them in bed and on the sofa. They then overheat (duvet blocks the vents etc) and components fail before they should. Laptops are great if you need the portability or are incredibly pushed for space. In every other respect, desktops are better.
I would agree with Macman and just to add the last laptop that I sold the guy placed it under his bed or he thought so and stood on the middle of the screen as he got out of bed. Nice little IBM X40 gone to the creator in the sky. I personally think the Dell's are ok if you just need a PC.

So thats why my laptops keep dying....:o

@OP: Generally a laptop of equivalent spec will cost more than a desktop however you might wish to consider a laptop because:

    - It is portable you can use it anywhere, take it on holiday etc.
    - Sit in the garden with it on a nice day
    - If you wanted you could use your existing monitor with it aswell if it has a VGA port as either a main or 2nd monitor
    - You can use a usb mouse as mentioned
    - You could even use your keyboard with it if it has the right connections - i.e. if the keyboard is ps/2 some laptops only have usb so it would not

So then you could connect mouse, keyboard and monitor and use it like a desktop sometimes and use it as a laptop other times

    just something to consider
