I have a good ipod docking station that I use at home for really good sound. I use an FM transmitter in the car to listen to my ipod but it drives me made with interfence etc. I can't plug my ipod directly into my stereo system. I was wondering if it was possible to use my home sytem in the car ? It does have any batteriesonly seems to run form the mains. Do any of youy gadget people know of a way I can do this ?

My home system is a Klipsch Roo=mGroove Wireless Ipod Speaker System see below

I'm assuming its a mains only device, so to use it in the car you would need a mains inverter like this one.

You would need to check the rating of you iPod dock, i.e Its wattage, to make sure the inverter you buy will drive it.

Ok on the Switching Adapter (black box between plug and docking station) it says

    Input : 100-240V 50/60 Hz max 1.1A
    Output: 15V 3.0A -__0___+

I couldnt see anything that mentions Watts though ! So looked it up and found
    W(watts)=I(current in amps) times V(volts)

    So is it 15 X 3 = 45watts ?

Looking at this am I right in thinking the one you suggested would not be suitable coz its 75Watts ? Or is the fact I think I need 45Watts and it provided 75W means its ok ?

Difficult to say, if the adapter was taking its maximum then that would be 230v x 1a = 230watts.
Its possible that you could run the unit directly off the car battery. It might be worth trying this as the mains adapter is supplying 15 volts DC and the car battery will supply a nominal 12 volts, get someone who has some electrical knowledge to try this for you though as a polarity reversal could be catastrophic.

Oh was I calculating it on the wrong thing then ?

    So input 230W
    Output 45W

Is this the kind of device that will do it though ?

    Or this one

I'd go for the first one myself, (the 120watt)I was calculating the power requirement on the input side, there are always losses, that's why mains adapters get hot, although I doubt it would consume the maximum.

I'm not sure if you can do that. I bought a stereo for my car that is iPod compatible and I have a cable that goes into my iPhone so I can listen to my music take calls and it also charges it.

Can I ask which stereo u got ? I thought of that as a option but was concerned about people breaking in 2 steel it and the cost !
