Private Parking Ticket - Faulty Machine

I regularly park in a station car park when travelling up to London and purchase my ticket by card at the parking ticket machine.
Recently the machine accepted my card pin but then aborted the transaction.
This happened with two credit cards and one debit card. All cards have subsequently been verified useable and in credit.
As I was in a hurry to catch the train I left a clearly displayed note on my car windscreen explaining the situation.
When I returned I had a ticket detailing a fine.
I wrote to the parking company explaining what had occurred and offering to pay, but the Company has maintained that the machine was not defective and the penalty stands. If not paid within 7 days I will incur additional costs.
What is my legal position and what responsibility does the parking Company have to maintain a serviceable ticket machine?

Does the ticket refer to Railway byelaws ?
Wash the ticket of your personal details and post it on www.pepipoo,com. they will help you."There's no such thing as Macra. Macra do not exist."

What was the name of the company? Was it NCP? For an informed answer the above is the only thing you can do as you can't put photo's/scans here until you have made 10 posts.I'd rather be an Optimist and be proved wrong than a Pessimist and be proved right.0
