Day out in the Midlands

I live in the North East. During the summer we are going to take our 3 boys to London for 3 nights. We are intending to go to Legoland on one day and to go into London itself on another. The 3rd day we will be travelling back.
Last time we did this, on the way back we stopped at Abraham's Heights and another time we stopped off at Ashby del la Zouche castle.
Can anyone recommend somewhere where we could stop that is near to the M1. We will be leaving early and want to spend the day somewhere before completing the rest of our journey.
We have 3 boys who are 11, 8 and 4. We have English Heritage membership (although we don't mind paying for somewhere if the boys will enjoy it).
Thanks for your help.
Mandy.

Are they footy fans? What about a Wembley Stadium tour? Its only a mile or so from the M1

...or I can recommend the SHERWOOD FOREST Nature Reserve! Its inbetween the M1 & A1, so you could possibly hit the A1 on the way back!

...Clumber Park is on the northern edge of Sherwood forest! It's so beautiful:

Snibston Discovery Park at Coalville. Indoors there's hands-on science activities and outdoors there's more science stuff, a fab water play area and an optional tour around the old colliery site.

If you have EH membership then you should go to Bolsover Castle! Just off the M1 near chesterfield. It's my fave castle in the world- well it would be, I got married there :j0

We ended up at the National Space Centre in Leicester and had a really good day. However, we really like the sound of Conkers, so may try it during the 6 weeks holidays. Go Ape sounds good too - we have one near to us but they have to be at least 10 which doesn't work for us right now as our children are 11, 8 and 4.
Thanks everyone. Mandy.0 -
