Will a dentist take a wisdom tooth out if I ask?

I go to a private dentist surgery.

One of my wisdom teeth is really hurting me, honestly I am in agony, I have been taking co-codemol every day since Sunday since it started growing in through my gum.

I have had problems with this tooth before in the sense, that it has had 3 growth spurts now and it hurts everytime but it has never hurt this bad.

I went to the dentist last time it was growing in and he said it looks fine, its just hurting cos they do hurt and he said now we know how babies feel lol, and that it looks like its growing in straight, and I left it at that, cos a few painkillers and a few days later it stopped hurting (obv stopped growing in)

But this time it is killing me, totally killing me, I have been on painkillers since Sunday, I am taking anti-inflametories as well, I have been putting anbesol on and nothing is working

I tried calling dentist today to get an appointment but just got a recorded message saying they are closed for staff training till tomorrow.

I go on holiday to Cyprus in two weeks for my brothers wedding and really dont want this to still be a problem when I go.

If I get to see the dentist tomorrow, and he says all is ok with the tooth its just growing (like its not growing in wonky or it not infected or anything) can I request he removes the tooth? cos I really cant take the pain (I know I will probs have to pay quite a lot of money, but I dont care its hurting that bad)

Or will he say no and tell me to put up with it?

If he says yes I can have it out, will he do it? or will I have to go elsewhere? and does anyone know how they would take it out? cos there is barely any tooth showing?

I don't think having your wisdom tooth out is exactly the pain free option. I know people who've had their wisdom tooth out and afterwards they were in a lot more pain. One friend was told to have a week off work afterwards and could only eat soup for a week as it was too painful to eat anything else. One side of her face was bruised as well so she didn't want to leave the house.

I know that these little growth spurts hurt (I found alcohol helps the best, clove oil helps but doesn't last long) but I think that's preferably to having it out if it is coming through fine.

Hope the pain goes away soon xx

    Thanks for your reply.

I know my mam told me when she had hers out it totally wrecked, and that her who face was bruised.

But I honestly feel like a week of pain without the tooth being there is preferable to a week of pain knowing that once this growth spurt stops it will come back again another time?

It doest just hurt it kills, I am worried there is something wrong this time, cos this particular tooth hasnt hurt this much before when its been coming in

I am also worried there isnt enough room for it to grow in?

The whole left side of my jaw is in pain cos of it.

Stupid question coming up, but my OH has an infection in his gum/tooth and is on anti-biotics, is there anyway I could have caught this off him?

In a weird way I am hoping that the dentist says I have an infection and thats why it is hurting so bad cos then at least we could treat the infection?

I can handle the normal growth pains but this is more than that :(

The guidance for NHS wisdom tooth removals is that you shouldn't take out 'symptomless' one that aren't causing a problem.

    This is pretty sensible.

Yours don't sound symptomless, so probably should be taken out.

Whether your dentist would feel comfortable taking that particular one out, or whether he feels referring you to an oral surgeon at the local (NHS) hospital (Or private hospital if you have private medical insurance) would be better, is up to him.

As Becky said, having one out isn't a painless option - it can be sore afterwards - but at least that's a once-only problem, then it's over.
    How to find a dentist.
    1. Get recommendations from friends/family/neighbours/etc.
    2. Once you have a short-list, VISIT the practices - dont just phone. Go on the pretext of getting a Practice Leaflet.
    3. Assess the helpfulness of the staff and the level of the facilities.
    4. Only book initial appointment when you find a place you are happy with.

Thanks for your reply, I was hoping you would see this thread.

If he doesnt feel comfortable doing it, how long would I have to wait for a hospital appointment? I know you cant give me exacts? just I am curious if it would be sorted before hols?

I just wish the pain would go away :(

It would depend entirely on how your local oral surgery clinics were set up - I couldn't begin to guess.

It shouldn't be too hard to keep it relatively quiet until the time came though.

What do you mean relatively quiet? I honestly cant see what else I can do to stop the pain than what I am doing? :(

I honestly dont think there is room for it even if it is growing in straight.

I only have 3 teeth after my canine teeth, I dont know if I am missing a premolar or a molar but I remember the dentist taking 4 teeth out, 2 from the bottom and 2 from the top when I was 13+ cos there wasnt enough room, so I can't see how my wisdom teeth are going to fit?

If it's been hurting since sunday the chances are that in a day or too the pain will stop. That's what happens with mine anyway, I get a week of intense pain every few months as the tooth pushes it's way up.
If it's started to break through the gum the it's perfectly normal for it to be so painfull, sometimes my whole jaw hurts and I even get earache but you just have to ride it out.
I would recommend getting some Bonjella though, i've found it to be much more effective than anbusol. Rinsing with salt water helps a lot too, and will help you to avoid infection, and a hot drink can numb the pain a bit.

Now would probably not be the best time to have it removed, there will probably be a wait to get an appointment and once you've had it out you could be in a lot more pain and it could get infected, which wouldn't be great if you're abroad ad can't get to a dentist.

This is all a bit too specific for me to answer without seeing things.

Your dentist will be best placed to advise you. There are various things he can do/recommend/prescribe that should keep it comfortable, but what they are will vary depending on the situation, and me trying to list every single possibility would be a waste of time.

Get to your dentist ASAP, and talk to him about it.

I know I am going to I promise lol, I am just all grrr cos I couldnt speak to anyone today cos they were at staff training, so its getting to me not even knowing if I can get an appointment tomorrow.

Yeah I mean if the Dentist tells me that honestly it is fine and that its just growing in and advises me on what to do to stop the pain in the meanwhile then I can live with that.

I am just crawling up the wall here in agony, it just sucks and I am feeling very sorry for myself lol.

I could handle the tooth hurting lol but its my whole left side of teeth/gums/cheek that are killing me :(

Thanks for listening to me whinge guys lol
