Fire alarm

The fire alarm was set of, not by cooking but steam from the shower in the bathroom.
Should fire alarms be set of by steam/or could the alarm be the wrong type.

regards,

There is a smoke alarm on the landing outside my bathroom, but the steam from the shower has never set off the alarm. It may be because I have an extractor fan in there so the room doesn't actually get very steamy.

I've never personally known steam to set off an alarm, whether from shower/bath or cooking I have to say, though I've heard that the hardwired electric ones, such as I have, can be set off by steam.

Have a read of this to see if it gives you any info on steam & smoke alarms. http://www.usfa.dhs.gov/downloads/pyfff/smkalarm.html
The bigger the bargain, the better I feel.

I should mention that there's only one of me, don't confuse me with others of the same name.

Smoke detectors can be set off by anything that interrupts either the optics, or ion stream (more likely optics for a domestic application). The steam is essentially doing the same as smoke would do. Part of my job is maintenance of fire detection systems, I have seen them set off by all sorts of things - including deoderant - To test them onboard we use a aerosol that produces a fine mist.

fire brigade does a free home visit with a free smoke alarm if you need one. look up local number in the phone book NOT 999.
  • The alarm in my kitchen is a heat one, rather than a fire one - the idea being burnt toast wouldn't set it off. Perhaps this is what you have fitted?

I lived in a rented place with a fire alarm just outside the bathroom - every time used the shower it went off and was ear-piercingly loud. Great when you just get out of the shower at 7am! Eventually our LA came over, switched the extractor fan on (it had been turned off at the wall) and that solved it.
