American immigration can be a nightmare...flew into Newark on 3rd June, and for the first time ever was met with relatively short queues...my happiness was short-lived, however, as they refused to accept that my visa (a J-1 student visa) was valid as I didn't have a job on arrival. To be fair to the immigration guy I was dealing with, he was very friendly and polite (also rare), but he had no idea of how the visa worked and that caused me huge delays. They kept trying to fob me off saying they'd give me a visa waiver instead, but as I'm here until mid september, that wouldn't have covered me...anyhow, got through in the end, but oh my God the delays!

People should be aware of how long it takes to get through US customs and immigration - it's not a quick process at the best of times!
