EDF wants big rise in our Direct Debit!
Don't know if anyone else has had this - we had ours yesterday - EDF want to increase our direct debit for electricity from £47 to £70 - and we are £120 in credit to them!
of course we aren't going to allow that and will challenge it. DH has calculated our worse-case scenario usage of electricity (based on last 2 heaviest quarters) for the next year and this predicts that a rise of just £12 per month would adequately cover it.
What really concerns me is that EDF have probably sent out thousands of these letters and many elderly, frail or sick people (like my own parents) may not even read or understand them. Their payments will just go up and up and they too, could be in credit already.
I thought some MP was going to be looking into this after it was broadcast that the utilities were holding around £4 billion of our money - but I've heard nothing more in the press - unsurprisingly!
It can't be allowed to continue, bearing in mind many people are being made redundant, or having their working hours reduced. Since privatisation no-one seems to be able to hold these companies in check. Well, here's one household that's not going to roll over and pay up! We can't be expected to bankroll our utitlities in a recession - can we?
Come on Martin - got any bright ideas?

What about the price increases coming up in autumn? Maybe they've included an anticipated price rise?0

Well, yes, of course, you may be right - but I don't think even in this case, that we should be expected to pay upfront in anticipation of price hikes!!!0
