i wish i had read your query this morning. i was a 999 call handler with the police for a year. it is one of the best jobs i have ever had!! i have since moved into a better job still within the force.
i hope you gave good answers about diversity and equality and gave good examples when they asked you questions. you can always apply again if you dont get thru this time - at least you will know what you are up against as the polis are not very bright when thinking up new questions to ask interviewees!!!!
will keep my fingers crossed for you!

Hi love,
I haven't been to assessment centre as yet. My application was by email and you just check into the communication centre every few days to see your status. On Wednesday it said Application Successful, invited to assessment centre! I was so happy.
I guess they are going to send me a date via the post which I will be well prepared for, thanks to all the help from such kind strangers, such as yourself!
Regarding race and diversity. Have you any suggestions you could give to accurately describe an example of this. The other one I think they will ask me about is Community and Customer focus, which I guess means how helping the customer impacts on the community, peoples peace of mind and social well being? Any suggestions would help me so much
Thankyou Again

Hi guys
Robster - I hope your interview went well.
I have been accepted for assessment and interview for a 999 call handler position. I really want this job, but am scared i'm going to mess the interiew up because i get terrible nerves! Can you give me a little insight into what the assessment and interview entails?
Thanks

If it helps, I did an assessment for a 999 centre - but the ambulance side, not the police side.
There were 3 computerised tests, using headphones.
1 - literacy - things like what is the right word, grammar, etc
2 - numeracy - much trickier for me, mental maths, including some decimal points in the calculations
3 - mock recorded calls, where you had to pick out information like address, house number, name and so on. These were commercial examples, I presume the agency mainly recruited sales workers hence having to get their credit card numbers. Basically to test hearing, attention, typing speed.
Hope that helps a little and good luck!"She who asks is a fool once. She who never asks is a fool forever"
I'm a fool quite often

I used to work as a call taker for the police and did my assessment a few years ago. When I did the assessment there were a few elements to complete.
There was a typing test to see how fast and accurate you were and also a windows based test to see if you could use windows applications.
There was a statement read out that you had to write down as quickly and accurately as you could.
There was a local geography test to make sure you knew the area you would be taking calls for
There was also a mock call with someone reporting a burglary that they had witnessed. With this call you had to make sure you got the info you needed from the witness - description of offenders, car used, time etc etc. The person playing the caller rambled on so I think they were checking you could get control of the call.
I then had an iterview with a call centre supervisor and a police inspector which was ok from what I remember!
Hope this helps!!0 -
Hi Ive just passed the application for police call handler, Im starting college in sept to improve on my maths and english ready for my assesment. Does anyone have a full list of what the assesment centre will invole, Thanks to haleyjayne for her post but a full list of what you will be tested on would be great!
Also ive placed my Llyods and Braclays debt into a company called "first step" so i no longer pay both banks as "first step" are trying to fight the debt so will this affect my application as they do checks. Any feedback would be helpful. Thanks.0
