All mail coming in and out of london will be affected and there maybe symapathy strikes xx
18 June 2009
A POSTMAN claims thousands of his colleagues are going on strike tomorrow because Royal Mail bosses won't talk to workers about modernisation plans.
More than 10,000 members of the Communications Workers Union (CWU) who work in all areas of delivery, collections and processing across London will go on a 24-hour strike tomorrow against Royal Mail's proposed cuts and modernisation plans.
Union members claim the company's bosses are ignoring an agreement struck in 2007 when they allegedly claimed they would negotiate modernisations plans with them.
The union claims 1,600 jobs are at risk in the capital while a spokesperson for Royal Mail refused to tell the Times how many posts they are getting rid off or changing.
Postman Steve Beadle, 41, who is the CWU representative for Greenwich said: "We don't want to go on strike. We would like to discuss this with our employer.
"Royal Mail is hell bent on making our jobs part-time. It is hard enough to survive on a full-time wage in this current climate.
A spokesperson for Royal Mail said: "Productivity in Royal Mail offices in London already lags behind the rest of the UK with the productivity in parts of London now up to 35 per cent below the best region and around 10 per cent worse than the UK average.#JusticeForGrenfell0 -
