A few years ago when my grandmother died and the will was sorted out, my dad gave me a cheque for £1000.
The very next day I got a letter from the inland revenue, out of the blue, saying i had underpaid and owed just under a grand.
Either it was really bad luck that I didn't get to spend the money on something nice, OR it was lucky that I was able to use the cheque to pay off what would have become a debt that I would have struggled to pay off.0
