Are there different USB leads?

just bought a new printer & they never come with USB leads do they! This printer says to use a "high speed 2.0 USB cable" but I have no idea if the lead I have that I used for my old printer is either high speed or 2.0 as there is nothing printed on the cable. My printer does seem to be slow so could I actually be using a cable thats no good.

  • How old is your computer? It could be that it doesn't support USB2.0. When you say it is printing slowly, does it keep pausing, or does it just take a long time in general to print a page? If the latter, the quality might be set to high (A usual ploy to get you to use more ink!)

Tis just a cable. 4 conductors, 2 are 5v power and 2 for data. Both the same, one USB cable could be shielded cable but still only 4 wires.

The speed of the USB port is down to the age/type of the motherboard, a cable will make no difference. V2.0 simply carries data at a faster rate. It may SAY use v2 but v1.1 will do the same only 4 seconds slower!
  • thanks for your replies. I have a Fujitsu Siemens laptop which is two years old. The printing doesn't pause, its just slow. Its a new printer, the Kodak ESP 5. You have said the quality might be set too high. How would I know & what would I have to do to make it lower? sorry if I find ignorant but I'm still learning!

That sounds like a photo printer. It's probably just going to be slow anyway, since it will normally be printing in photo quality.

Hope you are not using a photoprinter for plain text output.
